A short introduction

Oure International College of Sports was founded in 1987. At present it consists of a continuation school, an upper secondary school and a folk high school. Altogether, there are about 750 students and 130 employees in an exceptional, modern and dynamic learning environment.

You will find us in the very heart of Denmark, in the region of south-east Funen, about 20 minutes’ drive from the Great Belt Bridge and 12 km north of Svendborg. (Map)

We are close to both woods and beaches in the verdant countryside of Funen, and we use the fishing harbour at Lundeborg for our water sports and sailing.

The campus covers 33 hectares and contains lots of sports, teaching and accommodation facilities.

The college also has its own swimming pool, sports halls, outdoor football pitch with artificial turf, a golf driving range with a covered swing practice area, and a 22 metre high climbing tower.

Oure is pronounced “ore” – the name of the small village where we are located as a kind of “town within a village”.

Oure International College of Sports is an unconventional and modern learning environment for young people where we combine sports, theoretical disciplines and social life to develop personal competence.

We have no political, commercial or religious affiliations. The fundamental philosophy of the college is based on an open, critical, committed and modern approach to the present, and our educational aim is “to enable the individual student to take responsibility for his or her own life so as to act as a responsible world citizen” (See the booklet “Our Philosophy”).

Our inspiration and vision of culture and education is taken from the so called European Enlightenment tradition. Here the individual – the integrity and sovereignty of the individual – is in focus.

We believe that culture and education in a modern, dynamic and changing world concern strengthens the individual’s potential to act. Developing personal abilities and competence frees and empowers the individual to make his or her own choices, and adjust his or her course through life.

Furthermore, when liberated and empowered individuals meet,  genuine and useful communities occur. Such communities are defined and developed through dialogue, exchange and synergy. Communities based on current human needs and not automatically defined by tradition, history or inheritance.

We live in an essential community and a global reality, where humanity is more than ever involved in a common destiny – creating  unknown opportunities but also enormous risks. Thus the ideal of responsible world citizens is far from an empty cliché.

The educational tradition to which we belong often differentiates between culture and education. In our view this is not possible in a modern, post-traditional society which is constantly changing and developing. The individual of today has to master a range of complex and inter-related competences to be able to act. For us, the development of these “action skills” – technical, scientific, communicative, social and human – is the closest we get today to the traditional general education.

Oure International College of Sports is a unique learning environment, where the students experience all-round development and acquire a number of central communicative action skills. For the individual this happens through a continuous interplay and exchange between the three fields of learning of the college – sport, the academic/theoretical disciplines and the social environment of a residential college.

For most people attending a high school or a continuation school is a very important personal experience which offers a deeper personal future development.
In other words, there is a personal process of learning and breaking boundaries which enables the individual to act easier, take responsibility, make decisions, be informed – and thus make the individual master of his or her own life.

At Oure International College of Sports we see sport as a central and universal cultural discipline. With sport as the starting point, the individual develops a range of general and universal competences and abilities. In the terminology of contemporary educational thinking, these are called "transfer values". Also universal experiences which become indispensable personal tools in the individual process of formation.

Sport is about practising a number of concrete abilities such as personal training, technical knowledge and the ability to work in a concentrated and focused manner.

Sport is bodily awareness – how the body functions, how it reacts, and where its limits lie.

Sport is about personal experience – absorption, concentration and flow, lifting the whole individual to a higher level.

Sport is the ability to set yourself concrete goals and to pursue them.

Sport is about acting together with others - team-building at a very concrete level.

Sport is global and universal in its nature. Sport takes place across national, ethnic and geographical divisions. The students at Oure International College of Sports also experience the world – through study trips, excursions and exchange projects.
